Strategy - Food

I love my food. You would not know it, as I have always been really slim, but I do love good food. I do not however, wish to pay through the nose to buy the food and then pay through the nose again for the gas to cook it. With our gas bill seemingly spiralling year after year (despite insulation, changing to cheaper tariffs, etc.), it is just out of the question to cook lengthy meals all on gas. Yes, I have an electric oven, yes, I don't have to cook everything, I can eat cold food, etc.

But I do enjoy cooking and eating and experimenting with my own recipes, so in order to continue to enjoy this, I have had to make some changes to the way I cook.

  1. Slow Cooker - Cheap to buy, cheap to run, makes amazing delicious food out of the 'cheaper' cuts of meat, which in actual fact are the delicious cuts, if you cook them properly i.e. low 'n' slow. Also makes delicious vegetarian and vegan food like mixed bean stews etc.
  2. Eat more salads - there are salads for every time of year, why do we always have to have cooked veg with our mains? It is good to eat lots of raw food, apparently.
  3. Pressure Cooker - not bought one yet, but am hoping to buy one in September 2014

  1. Is electricity cheaper than gas for you? Here gas is typically cheaper than electricity especially for heating things.

We bought a bread machine as a Christmas present last year so I have fun playing with that. I'm not sure how much cheaper the bread we make is over store-bought (if at all), but it's certainly smells and tastes great. One of these days I'll work out just how much a loaf of bread costs to make.
    Best wishes,

  2. Gas used to be cheaper, but now our gas bill has significantly overtaken the electricity. I was wondering about getting an electric pressure cooker, but I think I prefer to have something which will still work in case there's a power cut. I've never ever known of a gas cut, but power cuts are more frequent... Although I've not had one in several years, but nearby areas have.

We had two bread makers and used to use them a lot, but I've somehow become slightly intolerant to wheat, so they're about to be recycled! My spouse makes soda bread sometimes, but we worked out the cost is not much less than buying bread.

  3. I have been using a toaster oven to cook a number of things. It has made a difference (vs. the oven) and the food tastes good.

    1. That sounds great, it's probably a lot more efficient
